Biography of Michele & Tom Grimm

Michele and Tom Grimm are freelance writers and photographers who have traveled throughout the United States and in 130 other countries taking photos and gathering material for books, websites, magazines, newspapers, and corporate clients.

The Grimms' popular how-to photography books include their latest guide, THE BASIC BOOK OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY, and THE BASIC BOOK OF PHOTOGRAPHY, now in its 5th edition and a best-seller for more than 40 years. Both are available from Penguin/​Plume, which also published The Basic Darkroom Book, a companion photo guide in its 3rd edition.

In addition, the couple has written The Good Guide for Bad Photographers, also from Plume/​Penguin, and All About 35mm Photography, published by Macmillan. The Grimms' have written several travel guides, including Away for the Weekend: Southern California, published by Clarkson N. Potter, Inc./​Crown, Florida, published in Japan by Kodansha and distributed by Harper & Row, and Tom's Hitchhiker's Handbook, published by New American Library. Their photographs also have illustrated six children's books.

For 16 years the peripatetic husband-and-wife team wrote a weekly travel column for the Los Angeles Times. They also were the photography columnists for Travel-Holiday magazine for a decade. In addition, the couple wrote a monthly travel column for the Southern California auto club's Westways magazine and a weekly travel column for La Opinion, the largest Spanish-language newspaper in Los Angeles.

The couple's list of article and/​or photo credits includes Travel & Leisure, Sunset, Cooking Light, Seventeen, Woman's Day, Modern Bride, Four Seasons Resorts Magazine, San Francisco Focus, Passport Newsletter, Scholastic, Christian Science Monitor, New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Miami Herald, Toronto Star, and many others.

Michele and Tom maintain a stock photo library of more than 150,000digital images and color transparencies taken on every continent during their global travels and assignments. The Grimms are longtime members of the Society of American Travel Writers, where Tom served as president in 1992-93. Their other professional memberships include the Authors Guild, the American Society of Media Photographers, the American Society of Journalists and Authors, and the Society of Professional Journalists.

Tom studied at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, where he received a bachelor's degree in Journalism and a master's degree in Speech. Michele studied Art at Miami-Dade Junior College in Florida. In addition to traveling more than five years in motor homes on photographic odysseys throughout North America, the couple has lived in Bend, Oregon, the Florida Keys, and Laguna Beach and San Clemente in Southern California. Recently they have settled on the Gulf Coast of Florida.
